John 19:16b-42
Key Verse: 19:18
“Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side
and Jesus in the middle.”
1. Read verses 16b-18. In what ways did Jesus suffer excruciating pain and terrible
shame? What did his crucifixion mean from God’s point of view? (Jn 1:29;
Jn 20:31)
2. Read verses 19-24. What was Pilate’s testimony? What does it mean that
he is “Jesus of Nazareth”? “King of the Jews?” How did
the soldiers reveal fallen man’s mentality? How did John view their actions?
(24; Ps 22:18)
3. Read verses 25-27. Who were these sorrowful women? (Lk 8:2,3) Think about his mother’s pain (Lk 2:35) What did he say to his mother and to John? Why?
4. Read verses 28-30. What does Jesus’ cry, “I am thirsty” reveal about him? What does he mean by “It is finished”? Why was Jesus’ death not a tragedy? (Rev 1:8; Jn 1:1) What does this mean to us that Jesus finished his mission?
5. Read verses 31-37. Why did the soldiers break the legs of the other two men? Why not Jesus’ legs? What did the flow of blood and water mean? How did John the eye-witness see these events? (35-37)
6. What is the significance of Jesus’ burial by two prominent Sanhedrin
members? How were they changed by Jesus’ death? What does the death of
Jesus mean to you?
