John 7:53-8:30
Key Verse: 8:12
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light
of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have
the light of life.’”
* JESUS SAVES A CONDEMNED WOMAN (7:53-8:11)
1. After participating in the last and greatest day of the Feast, where did
Jesus and the people go? How did Jesus probably spend the night? Why? (Lk 6:12)
2. How did Jesus carry out his mission from God in the temple courts? Why did
the people gather around him so early in the morning? (Think about the importance
of the ministry of the word—Jn 7:37;Jn 5:24,25; 1Pe 1:24,25)
3. Read verses 8:4-6a. How did the religious leaders try to trap Jesus? What does this tell us about them? How did Jesus expose their hypocrisy? (6b-9)
4. Read verses 6b-11. Think about this woman’s situation. How did Jesus save her from condemnation? How does he take her condemnation—and ours—upon himself? See also Ro 8:1; Gal 3:13. What did Jesus say to her? What does this mean?
* “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD” (12-30)
5. Read verse 12. How does this verse give us new life direction? What is the darkness that those without Jesus walk in? In what sense was this woman living in darkness? How can darkness be defeated? (Jn 1:5; 1Pe 2:9)
6. What was the religious leaders’ response? Why? (13) Read verses 14-20. Why is Jesus’ testimony that he is the light of the world valid? Why is the judgment of the Jews not valid?
7. Read verses 21-30. How did Jesus teach the gospel to these unbelieving Jews? What is his promise and what is his warning?
8. How was it possible for Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of mankind?
(29) What is the consequence of rejecting Jesus’ death for our sins? (21,24)
How did some respond to him?
