John 8:31-59

“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’”

1. What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus? How can one be a true disciple? Why must we? What does it mean to be free? How can we know the truth? What are some characteristics of truth?

2. How did the Jews respond to Jesus’ words? (33) How did their racial pride keep them from being free? Read verses 34-36. How did Jesus want to help them? How is a slave different from a son? (35) How can slaves become sons?

3. Read verses 37-41. In what sense were they Abraham’s children and in what sense were they not? Why are Abraham’s children also children of God?

6 How had God revealed his plan of world salvation through Abraham? What did Jesus teach them about Abraham’s faith? (What was the promise that Abraham held on to? (Ge 22:18) How did they respond to Jesus’ Bible teaching? Why?
