THE GOOD SAMARITAN

Luke 10:25-42

Key Verse: 10:28

* DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE (25-29)

1. What did the expert in the law ask Jesus? Why was this question important, and why did he ask it? (See Lk18:18,22,23)

2. How did the man answer his own question? Why was his answer correct? (Mt22:37-40; 1Jn3:14,16; Dt6:5; Lev19:18b) How did Jesus help him? (28) What did Jesus mean?

3. What other question did the expert in the law ask? Why did he ask this? What kind of answer do you think he expected?

* GO AND DO LIKEWISE (30-37)

4. What happened to the man going from Jerusalem to Jericho?

5. Who were the first two people to see this injured and dying man? Were they familiar with Dt6:5 and Lev19:18b? How might they have justified themselves (Nu19:11) and further rationalized? What does this show about their spiritual condition? About the religious leaders of that time?

6. What was the initial reaction of the Samaritan to the injured man? How did he help him? What did he lose in time, money and effort to help this man? What were the dangers involved? What does this show about the Samaritan?

7. Why do you think Jesus chose a Samaritan to be the hero of his story? What was the punch line? How is this related to verse 28? Who is your neighbor? Who can be like the good Samaritan?

* BUT ONLY ONE THING IS NEEDED (38-42)

8. How did Martha receive Jesus and his disciples? How did she show her love for Jesus? What did Mary do? Why did Martha complain? How is her demand reasonable in itself? Why was she wrong?

9. How did Jesus counsel Martha? Why didn't he send Mary to help her? What is the one thing needed, the thing Jesus wants most from those who love him?

10. How do the teaching of the parable and the lesson taught in Martha's house complement each other?
