HE IS THE GOD OF THE LIVING

Luke 20:20-47

Key Verse: 20:38

* OUR OBLIGATION TO CAESAR AND TO GOD (20-26)

1. Who sent spies to watch Jesus? For what purpose? (19,20) How did they flatter him, and why? What was their question? In what way could it lead to his entrapment?

2. How did Jesus answer them? What does his answer teach about man's basic obligations to his country? To God? What do you think those obligations are?

* "WHOSE WIFE WILL SHE BE?" (27-33)

3. Who were the Sadducees? What did they believe? (Ac 23:8) What was their tragic story, and their question? On what law and custom was their question based? (Ge 38:1-11; Dt 25:5)

4. What were they trying to prove? What does their story and question reveal about their own inner lives?

* THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, THE GOD OF JACOB (34-40)

5. Read Jesus' answer in verses 34-36. In this age, what are people concerned about? Why can't this be the real solution to peoples' problems? (Compare Lk 17:26)

6. How will "that age" or the heavenly kingdom be different? Why is this the true hope of all human beings? What does it mean that we will be like the angels? Who will the children of God be like in the resurrection?

7. Read verse 37. How did Jesus show from the Bible (Ex 3:6; vs 37) that man is immortal, that the dead rise?

8. Read verse 38. What does it mean that God is not the God of the dead but of the living? What does it mean to us?

* "WHOSE SON IS THE CHRIST?" (41-47)

9. What question did Jesus ask the religious leaders? (41,42,44) What does this quotation from Psalm 110:1 teach about the deity and ultimate victory of the Christ?

10. What does the lifestyle of the teachers of the law reveal about their spiritual condition? Why did Jesus tell his disciples in the presence of the people to beware of them?
