THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS
Luke 4:1-13
Key Verse: 4:12
* MAN DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE (1-4)
1. Where did the Spirit lead Jesus after his baptism? Why? Why did he have to be tempted by devil at the outset of his ministry?
2. How long was Jesus tempted by the devil? How does Luke describe his physical condition? How did the devil tempt Jesus first? Why might the devil's suggestion be very tempting to Jesus?
3. Why did the devil preface the temptation with the words "If you are the Son of God"? Why would it be wrong for Jesus to use his power to make bread when he was hungry? How does this bread problem become a temptation to us?
4. How did Jesus answer the devil? What did he mean by his answer? Look at Deuteronomy 8:3 and Matthew 4:4. What is added? What does this teach us about the meaning of Jesus answer?
5. What promise can we claim to overcome the devil when he tempts us about our bread problem? (Mt.6:33) What can we learn from Jesus about how to defeat the devil?
* WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD (5-8)
6. Where did the devil then take Jesus, and what did he show him? What did he offer Jesus? In what respect was his boast correct? How was it a lie? Why might Jesus be tempted?
7. What compromise did the devil propose? How did Jesus answer him? (Dt. 6:13) what does it mean to "worship the Lord your God and serve him only"? (Dt.6:5) What does Jesus' answer teach about compromise?
* DO NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST (9-13)
8. Where did the devil take Jesus for the third temptation? What did he temp Jesus to do? How did he misuse Scripture? What was God's purpose in
giving the promise in Psalm 91:11,12?9. How was this a temptation to take the easy way? (What was Jesus' way? [Mt.16:21)] How did Jesus answer this temptation? (Dt.6:16) What does Jesus teach about the easy way? About how to defeat temptation? (1 Cor.10:13)
