IF ANYONE WOULD COME AFTER ME

Luke 9:18-27

Key Verse 9:23

* THE CHRIST OF GOD (18-20)

1.Who was with Jesus, where was he (Mt 16:13), and what was he doing when this conversation took place? What might he have prayed about? (See Jn 17:1,17)

2.What were the two questions Jesus asked his disciples after praying? How were these questions similar? How were they different?

3.How did the disciples answer the first question? What did the ordinary people of the times say about Jesus? Why? (See also Lk 9:7-9)

4.How did Peter answer the second question? How and why was the disciples' view of Jesus different from that of the crowd? What does it mean that Jesus is the Christ of God? (See Isa 9:6 and think about the meaning of each title. See also Lk 4:18,19.)

5.What warning did Jesus give his disciples? Why? What does the title "Son of Man" tell us about Jesus?

6.Read verse 22. What does this verse tell us about the work of Christ? What was the specific mission of Jesus? (Isa 53:4-7) How did he become the Christ of God for us? (Think about the gospel.)

* THREE BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF DISCIPLES (23)

7.Look at verse 23. What is the first requirement for discipleship? .What does this mean? (See Php 2:5-8; Gal 5:24.)

8.What is the second requirement for discipleship? (23) What does this mean? Why "daily"? What is the third requirement? What does "Follow me" mean?

* REWARDS OF DISCIPLESHIP (24-27)

9.Read verses 24-25. Why. does the way of discipleship lead to life? What is the alternative? How can one save his life by losing it, and lose his life by saving it? What is the answer to Jesus' question in verse 25?

10. Read verses 26,27. What is our great hope as Jesus' disciples? What promise does Jesus give those who accept him as Messiah and take the cross of mission? What does it mean to see the kingdom of God? (Ro 8:17; Jn 3:3)
