JESUS, THE HORN OF SALVATION

Luke 1:57-80

"Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. He has raised up a horn
of salvation for us in the house of his servant David."


1. Read verses 57-66. What did it mean to Zechariah and Elizabeth to have a son? Why did they insist that their son be named "John"? Why had Zechariah been unable to speak? What did he say when his speech was restored?

2. Read verses 67-68. What did Zechariah prophesy? Why did he praise God? What does "he has come and has redeemed his people" mean?

3. Read verses 69-70. What does "horn" imply? (See 2 Sa 22:3; Rev 12:3,9) Why does he call Jesus "the horn of salvation"? Why "raised up in the house of David"? What did God say through his prophets? (Isa 9:6,7)

4. Read verses 71-75. From what does the horn of salvation save us? Who is our enemy? What happens when we are pierced by Satan's horn? Read verses 72- 73. What did God swear to Abraham? (Ge 22:18) How did he fulfill his oath?

5. Read verses 74-75. What is God's larger purpose in rescuing us? Think about the meaning of "to serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all our days."

6. Read verses 76-77. What was to be the mission of Zechariah's son?

7. What reveals God's tender mercy? What is the salvation which he gives? What does Jesus the Rising Sun do? With what result?
