NEW WINE INTO NEW WINESKINS

Luke 5:33-39
Key Verse: 5:38

“No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.”

1. Read verse 33. Who criticized Jesus’ disciples? Why did they do so? What do you know about the religious activities of John’s disciples? The disciples of the Pharisees? (Mt 5:5,16) How might this criticism have affected Jesus’ disciples?

2. Read verse 34. How did Jesus defend his disciples? What did Jesus teach about himself and his relationship with his people? (Rev 19:6-7; 21:2-3) What do you learn about the characteristic of life in Jesus? Why might the feast at Levi’s house be like a heavenly
celebration? (Lk 15:1-7)

3. Read verse 36. Why can’t a new patch be put on an old garment? Read verse 37. Why can’t new wine be put into old wineskins? In the context of this passage, what is the new wine? (Heb 4:12) New wineskins? Old wine? Old wineskins?

4. How were Jesus’ first disciples like new wineskins? (5:5, 5:28) What are the characteristics of new wineskin like people? How were the Pharisees like old wineskins? (39) What are the characteristics of old wineskin like people?

5. Read verse 38. What kind of people must we be to contain the new wine? How can you be like a new wineskin?
