1. What was the growing threat to Jesus and his “new wineskin” ministry? (11) Read verse 12. What did Jesus do? What might have been his prayer topic? (Lk 11:2) What do you learn about prayer from Jesus?
2. Read verse 13. On what basis did Jesus choose his apostles? Why might Jesus have chosen twelve of them? What does the designation “apostle” tell about Jesus’ purpose in choosing them?
3. Read verses 14-16. Who was Simon? (Lk 4:38-39; 5:1-11) Why did Jesus change
Simon’s name to Peter?
4. What does this suggest about the importance of one person? (Mt 16:18) Think
about Andrew (Jn 6:8), James, John (Mt 20:20-21), and the others. Why might
Jesus choose such a diverse group?
5. Read verses 17-19. Describe the scene of Jesus’ presentation of the twelve apostles. Read verses 20-23. According to Jesus’ words, who are the blessed? Why are they blessed? What basic attitude must disciples of Jesus have?
6. Read verses 24-26. According to Jesus’ words, for whom are woes reserved? Why? Why is it important for his disciples to accept his teaching about woes?
