Luke 7:1-10

"When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.'"

1. Read verses 1-2. What was a centurion? What was the situation of servants or slaves in the Roman Empire? What is unusual about this centurion's attitude toward his dying servant? How does he reveal the image of Jesus? (Jn 10:11)

2. Read verse 3. What might the centurion have heard about Jesus? What hope did he find for his dying servant? How did he bring this problem to Jesus?

3. Read verses 4-6a. What was the attitude of the Jewish elders toward Jesus? Toward the centurion? Describe the relationship between the elders and the centurion. How was such a relationship possible?

4. Read verses 6b-8. What did the centurion realize as Jesus was on the way to his house? Describe his attitude toward Jesus and Jesus' word. How had he come to have this kind of attitude?

5. Read verses 9-10. How did Jesus react to the centurion's words? What did Jesus see in the centurion? What happened to the dying servant? How would Jesus evaluate your faith?
