Mark 9:14-29

1. Read verses 14-15. Where had Jesus and the three disciples been? What was going on at the foot of the mountain? How did the people respond when they saw Jesus? Why?

2. Read verses 16-18. What did Jesus ask? Who answered? What was the problem of the man’s son? What were the symptoms? What had happened to make things worse?

3. Read verse 19. What did Jesus see as the root problem? How did the disciples, the teachers of the law and the boy’s father each reveal their unbelief?

4. Read verses 20-21. What happened when they brought the boy to Jesus? What did Jesus do? (21a) Why did he direct his attention to the boy’s father?

5. Read verses 21b-24. How did the boy’s father respond? What does this reveal about him and his faith? How did Jesus rebuke him? What does this mean? What does verse 24 show us about the father?

6. Read verses 25-27. What did Jesus do? What happened? What does this show us about the character of the devil and his way of working? How did Jesus win the victory?

7. Read verses 28-29. Why had the disciples failed to cast out the evil spirit? What can we learn here about prayer and faith?
