John 14:1-31

1. Read verses 1-4. Why were the disciples troubled? What did Jesus tell them to do to overcome anxiety? Where was he going and why? What did he promise? What does it mean to trust in God and to trust in Jesus?

2. Read verses 5-7. How did Thomas respond? Why? What did Jesus teach him? What does it mean that Jesus is the truth? (Jn 18:37;Jn 8:31,32; Jn 3:21; Ro 1:18-20,25) The life? (Jn 1:4; 5:24) Why is Jesus the only way to God? (Jn 1:18; Acts 4:12; 1 Ti 2:5,6)

3. Read verses 8-11. To what words did Philip respond? What was his response? Why? What did Jesus teach him about belief? About himself? Read verses 12-14. What did Jesus promise? What does this mean?

4. Read verses 15-21. How do we show our love for Jesus? (How many times is this repeated in 15-31?) What did Jesus promise those who love and obey him? Who is the other Counselor? How is he like the first Counselor and how is he different?

5. Read verse 22-24. What did Judas ask? Why? What was Jesus’ answer? Why can Jesus only show himself to those who love and obey him? How does he show himself?

6. Read verse 25-27. Who is the Counselor and who sends him? Why in Jesus’ name? What does he do? What does Jesus promise to give? How is Jesus' peace different from that of the world? How is this related to verse 1?

7. Read verses 28-31. Why should disciples be glad that Jesus is going away? Who is the prince of this world? Why does not have no hold on Jesus? What can we learn from Jesus about how to defeat the world and its prince? Where did they go after this?
