Case Study V

DISCIPLESHIP MAKING MINISTRY

By Dr. Daniel Hong from Lehigh UBF

[1] Goal (Mission Statement)

Jesus’ disciple
Jesus(God) centered man
What does Jesus (God) want?

Jesus’ (God’s) vision

Old Testament

Adam: Be fruitful, increase in number, rule over..(Gen 1:28)

Noah: Make an ark (Gen 6:14)

Abraham: You will be a blessing. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you (Gen                          12:2,3)----Isaac, Jacob

Israel: You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Ex. 19:5,6)
The law will go out from Zion (Isa 2:3)

New Testament

World mission command:
Preach the good news to all creation (Mk 16:15)

Everyone is a priest: You are a chosen people, a royal priest, a holy nation, people belonging to Godl…(1 Pe 2:9)

God’s vision upon one individual

<--> World salvation.

[2] Disciple Making

1. Principle I: What is best for a ‘Disciple’ from God’s point of view?

2. Principle II: I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow (1 Cor 3:6)

Two important aspects:

Jesus can help all kinds of people but I am not Jesus. What’s the implication of this?

Understanding based on experience
Moral Authority

1. My personal growth

Can not produce a disciple whose faith is greater than mine

Can not help a disciple solve a problem that I myself can not solve

Can not challenge a sin problem that remains unsolved to me

------à Disciple is a ‘copy’ of myself.

2. Dicision of faith: Defining moment

God over ‘self’

Abraham: Surrendering Isaac (Gen 22)
Isaac: Stay in Gerar and live by faith (Gen 26:2)
Israel: The Red Sea experience
Rich young ruler: sell everything and follow me

Seize the moment
Spiritual insight and authority
Love of soul

Identify the next step of growth and help make some decision of faith that pleases God
